‘But you ought to be. Existence is so joyful.’

‘Only rarely so for human beings.’

He looked downcast. ‘But that is sad. I know it’s true from the thoughts I pick up and the things I see.’

‘I am not unhappy, Kurmos. There is much to rejoice in and from time to time wonderful experiences such as this afternoon in the Garden. I am content but I am not pleased with myself. I fail in so many things.’

He looked astonished. ‘I don’t believe that. At least you haven’t failed in your contacts with Pan and with us. Isn’t that something to be pleased about?’

‘Yes, Kurmos, it is. I am a privileged person and I know it.’

He smiled. ‘That’s better. You know that we all love you very much and we will help you as much as we can—all of us.’

‘Thank you, Kurmos. That gives me confidence and makes me very happy.’

I felt lighthearted and laughed.

‘Now I must go.’

‘It is your busy day!’

‘Yes, my busy day.’ He looked at me, chuckled and, turning, ran back the way we had come, gradually fading out as he did so.
